Last week on Saturday night I visit Stadium Maguwoharjo, which has become an evacuation center for victims of Merapi’s eruptions. When I entered the main gate I was welcomed by a dangdut performance.
I passed the stage where the dangdut singer and musicians were performing. The lyrics were mostly about women, men and relationships, and they also sang the hit dangdut song Keong Racun.
They sang well and there was sexy dancing. I think the performance was to entertain the refugees at the evacuation shelter. However, I was surprised to see most of the audience was children. They stood near the stage and followed the singer’s dancing and singing.
Is this entertainment for children or adults? If this is entertainment for children, why is it performed late at night, at almost 10 o’clock? And why do the songs mostly discuss adult life and relationships? Moreover, sometimes they contain impolite words for children to hear.
The children of refugees need more attention because unsuitable entertainment like this can influence their character development.
